Who we are
The Oxford University Classics Society (original foundation 1966; refoundation after brief hiatus 2019) is a student-led society running events during term time from mid-October to mid-June. We are a rapidly growing society with members who study Classics or Classics-related subjects, as well as a wide range of other degree subjects. Our chief mission is to provide a space for social and academic enrichment for anyone interested in the ancient world and its study, and to boost the accessibility and outreach potential of Classics and related subjects at Oxford.
Please see our 'Meet the Committee' page to find out more about our current committee members.
What makes us stand out
Careers events
We are dedicated to informing our members about the huge number of careers options that are open to them after graduation. Each term we invite guest speakers to provide information about the huge variety options open to graduates, as well as to provide an insight into specific career paths. For example this past Hilary we hosted advisors from the Oxford careers service with hugely helpful and reassuring experience in advising Classics students. We ask our members to specify the kinds of careers that interest them so that we can tailor our careers events and make them as relevant and useful as possible.
Access and Outreach initatives
We commit to running events which aim to increase the access that prospective students from disadvantaged backgrounds have to the world of Classics. These events take place in the form of lectures aimed at sixth form students, as well as informal advice sessions to provide a different insight to studying Classics at Oxford, perhaps beyond what might be gained from an open or taster day. Moreover, we also invite prospective students to watch our online events attended by widely respected guest speakers.
If you are a teacher and think your students might be interested in attending our outreach events please don't hesitate to get in touch with us!
